(1) Never apply heat to an area where any loss of sensation exists. (2) Never apply heat immediately after an injury. (3) Never apply heat directly to the eyes or the genitalia, as burns may occur. (4) Never apply heat to the abdomen if there is a possibility that the patient is pregnant. (5) Never apply any form of heat on an open wound, a burn, or over an area of malignancy; infected areas should also be avoided unless approved by a physician. (6) To reduce the risk of complications, do not use thermotherapy on patients with a history of reduced thermal regulation or diabetes. (7) Always monitor the time during which thermotherapy is applied and use appropriate padding or towels.
