Answer to Question 1

Answer: The situational leadership theory is a contingency theory that focuses on followers' readiness. Hersey and Blanchard argue that successful leadership is achieved by selecting the right leadership style, which is contingent on the level of the followers' readiness. The emphasis on the followers in leadership effectiveness reflects the reality that it is the followers who accept or reject the leader. Regardless of what the leader does, effectiveness depends on the actions of his or her followers. And, readiness refers to the extent to which people have the ability and willingness to accomplish a specific task. The four specific leadership styles are as follows:
a. Telling (high tasklow relationship)  the leader defines roles and tells people what, how, when, and where to do various tasks.
b. Selling (high taskhigh relationship)  the leader provides both directive and supportive behavior.
c. Participating (low taskhigh relationship)  the leader and follower share in decision making; the main role of the leader is facilitating and communicating.
d. Delegating (low tasklow relationship)  the leader provides little direction or support.
