Answer to Question 1

Yes, a manager can increase an employee's intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is easier to increase but the effects don't last. Intrinsic motivation produces stronger motivational results and though harder to influence, it is still very much within a manager's power. Students can list and describe numerous factors; many lead to an improvement in the employee's professional skills and appeal to their pride and feelings of accomplishment. Providing positive feedback and constructive criticism, providing autonomy but support for their work, expanding their work experiences, ask them how they would like to develop and/or what they would find interesting in their work, helping the employee to grow, providing room for advancement and increasing empowerment are all ways this can be accomplished.
