Answer to Question 1

Path analysis is a complex correlational procedure used when one is testing models of causation among variables. It does not discover causes, but sheds light on the tenability of causal models that have been formulated based on theory.

Answer to Question 2

We use multiple regression when we want to determine the maximum correlation of more than one independent variable with a dependent variable. For example, assume we have several academic measures and we want to predict grade point average. Multiple regression allows us to use all of the academic variables to determine the best possible weighted combination for maximum correlation. The result is a prediction equation that can be used with other groups to predict grade point average.
