Declarative knowledge is factual knowledge, and can be measured by paper and pencil or multiple-choice tests.

Procedural knowledge is when trainees can organize information into mental models or cognitive maps. Procedural knowledge can be measured by using paired comparisons or by using configuration of concepts.

Strategic knowledge is the ability to develop and organize cognitive strategies used in problem solving. One way to measure strategic knowledge is probed protocol analysis.
