Answer to Question 1

Instant messaging in a workplace can be useful when quick answers are needed. An IM is much faster than a phone call or conference call. It is especially useful for short questions, as it requires none of the social courtesies or dedicated attention that phone calls demand. People can also multitask during IM exchanges. It is a common collaborative tool for people in the same building, who may keep the IM client active all day long to receive brief text messages from co-workers in the next cubicle or around the world. IM software has introduced a critically important collaborative feature called presence awareness, which allows users to display their current status to their contacts, colleagues, or buddy list. The software shows whether a person is logged in. Arguably, this feature is the killer app of IM, since it shows whether the person is available to answer a question, pick up the phone, or stop by for a brief meeting.
