It is a common collaborative tool for people in the same building, who may keep the IM client active all day long to receive brief text messages from co-workers in the next cubicle or around the world. IM software has introduced a critically important collaborative feature called presence awareness, which allows users to display their current status to their contacts, colleagues, or buddy list. The software shows whether a person is logged in. Arguably, this feature is the killer app of IM, since it shows whether the person is available to answer a question, pick up the phone, or stop by for a brief meeting.
