The orthopedic unit for Hospital LM was the last area to adopt the electronic medical record (EMR) two months ago. There are differing opinions about an upcoming revision to the EMR system and how it will affect the charting process.
 
  Two experienced nurses are talking about the upcoming change, and Nurse Q states that she does not necessarily feel that this will be a good idea, but will do it anyway. She also stated, Why couldn't it just stay the way it was? There was nothing wrong with our charting on this unit Nurse Q's response to the planned change event can be classified as: a. rejector c. late minority
  b. early inhibitor d. laggard

Nurse Q's response to the planned change to the current electronic medical record and charting system shows her reluctance to adopt change and that she prefers stability and tradition. This type of behavior is part of the laggard behavioral response to change. Rejectors tend to openly oppose and reject change and may even be covert in their response. Late majority (not late minority) individuals are also called followers.

Silber (1993) identified four factors that can affect an individual's ability to cope with change events. These four factors are: 1) flexibility for change (not reluctance toward change), 2) evaluation of the immediate situation, 3) anticipated consequences of change, and 4) the individual's stateor what they may stand to win or losein regard to the change.
