Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1

Rationale: Electronic health records can improve communication among health care providers. Nurses can document client care and client history, provide a legal record of care, and improve the quality of care delivered. The system is very expensive to set up for health care organizations. It is difficult to secure information, and can be developed without input from clinicians. When clinicians are not able to contribute ideas for design of the system, this can lead to inefficient methods of documentation and extra work for nurses. The system can alert the nurse to potential drug interactions. The system can reduce the amount of documentation that is required, if the system is set up correctly with adequate amount of input from nurses who will be using the system.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 1

Rationale: Communication between health informatics and nursing informatics could become easier. There will be better interaction and interdependence among the disciplines with advancements in this field. Nursing education will continue to rely more on distance education, and students will spend less time in traditional classroom settings. Electronic health records will be available to more health care organizations and types of health care providers.
Confidentiality issues will continue to increase with advances in this field.
