How does the reading process differ when students are reading stories, nonfiction, and poetry? Select a theme and determine one selection from each type of writing. Explain how you will use the reading process to guide the students through each text.

Listening - listen to classmates talk in grand conversation; listen to story on tape.
Reading - read sequels, other stories by the author; research the author or topic. Viewing - examine illustrations; view film version. Talking - participate in grand conversation; retell stories; reenact a story; Hot Seat. Writing - write in reading logs; write retelling; write new version; letter to author. Visually representing - create open-mind portrait; draw a diagram of the story; make puppets. Practical application will vary by student, text selected.
