Answer to Question 1

Describe key features of integrated, content-focused activities in a comprehensive early literacy program.

Integrated, content-focused activities provide opportunities for children to investigate topics that are of interest to them. They combine oral language, reading and writing concept and skills in learning about the world and specific content in science, mathematics, social studies and the English language arts. These activities develop children's background knowledge that they need for listening comprehension and future reading comprehension. The activities encourage learning by doing, problem solving and creativity. They help children make discoveries about relationships and facts.

Answer to Question 2

Provide a rationale for using a direct instruction approach in early literacy teaching.

A direct instruction approach helps children progress to a learning goal (e.g., learning alphabet letter names). It provides a clear model followed by assistance that helps the child achieve the skill. It is highly effective for teaching specific basic skills in early reading, such as phonemic awareness, that are the building blocks of learning to read. It is an efficient and effective approach in some areas of early literacy skill development.
