Answer to Question 1

Play is related to early literacy in these ways:
Learning takes place deliberately through planning, developing, and continuity of play.
Development of symbolic representation progresses as children imagine objects to be many different things.
Oral language is practiced as children talk through pretend scenarios.
Play uses content-related skills, including reading and writing, practice encoding and decoding meaning, matching voice to print, and correspondence of sounds and symbols.

Answer to Question 2

Possible guidelines:
Help families understand how young children think and learn best.
 Create working partnerships with families.
Support family-friendly schools and school-friendly families.
 Use information from professional associations.
Learning at home is not teaching school subjects, but encouraging, listening, reacting, praising, guiding, monitoring, and discussing.
Plan, implement, and evaluate events at school to support family involvement in learning at home.
Effective programs vary by schools and populations.
