Although total cholesterol levels are valuable tools, they should be combined with a measure of HDL and LDL cholesterol. Older people may have a total cholesterol level within normal range but have low HDL and elevated LDL levels and be at increased risk for coronary heart disease (response C). Triglyceride levels should be low to guard against coronary heart disease (response D).
