Answer to Question 1

B
When excess body tissue is broken down, as can occur with malnutrition or illness, the nitrogen balance in the body is altered. This balance is measured by the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test, which is a urine test. The hematocrit, hemoglobin, and serum creatinine tests can also be used to diagnose protein deficits, but the primary test used for determining protein metabolism is BUN.

Answer to Question 2

B
Responses A, C, and D would give the nurse information regarding the function of the older person's nose and sinuses. Appetite would not give specific information regarding nasal function, even though there is a relationship between smell and the taste of food.
