Answer to Question 2

Most people who try to think of nothing report that it is even harder to create a still mind by thinking about making it happen. As you were trying to still your mind, you probably noticed thoughts popping in and out of your head at lightning speed, coming from nowhere into your consciousness, leading to other thoughts, which led to still other thoughts, and so on. As hard as you try, you notice that it is virtually impossible to force your mind to become blank.

The harder we try not to think of something, the more it stays in our mind. The harder we try to empty our mind, the more it fills with thoughts. Trying to empty your mind in any determined way is not meditation. The result of this thinking process can hardly be considered peaceful.
