Answer to Question 1

Answer: Because age at first birth influences the total number of births that a woman might have in her life, and this affects population growth. The age of the mother also provides a good indication of incidences of low birth weight babies, multiple births, and babies with birth defects. Finally, it influences the mother's ability to pursue or complete higher education.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Many students abandon their studies, fail to find needed social resources such as affordable child care, cannot make time for both school and parenthood, or have limited monetary resources.
