Answer to Question 1

Answer: Secondhand smoke (environmental tobacco smoke) is the smoke nonsmokers are exposed to when someone has been smoking nearby; it is a combination of sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. Secondhand smoke is a serious health issue that can lead to disease and premature death in children and nonsmoking adults.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: In 1971, Congress prohibited the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio. In the summer of 2009, the U.S. Congress passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. The purpose of the act was to protect public health by allowing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate the content, marketing, and sales of tobacco products. Specifically, the FDA regulates advertising, packaging, and access to tobacco-related health care.
