International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modificationsis a system of standardized codes to classify mortality and morbidity. ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes are required on insurance claims to justify the need for the procedure or service performed. ICD -9-CM is also used to statistically track causes of morbidity and death.

Students might also remember that the first two volumes provide a listing andan index of diagnosis codes, whereas the third volume lists codes for hospital inpatient procedures.

Students might also add that diagnosis codes could be used as keys to protocols and care plans.

Answer to Question 2

Current Procedural Terminology, fourth edition. CPT-4 is a billing code set that provides standardized codes for reporting medical services, procedures, and treatments performed for patients by the medical staff.
