Answer to Question 2

There are several uses of lasers in dentistry. Low-level lasers can find pits in tooth enamel that may become cavities. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved laser machines for drilling and filling cavities; lasers also reduce the bacteria in the cavity.
Minimally invasive dentistry uses lasers. Surgical lasers, used in place of drills, burst cells by heating them. One laser works on hard tissue, another on soft tissue. Lasers can quickly harden the material used to fill the tooth, reducing the time it takes to complete a filling. Lasers cannot be used where previous fillings or crowns exist.
Lasers are used by periodontists; they can reshape the gums. They can also be used to remove bacteria from periodontal pockets, but their use is limited in root canal therapy. The FDA has approved one laser for treating root canals. Lasers can be used in some instances to help clean out the root canal and to remove bacteria. However, they can only be used in straight canals because the instruments are glass and do not bend. If the temperature is too high, the canal space can be charred, and the tooth and surrounding tissue can be damaged.
Lasers also have uses in cosmetic dentistry. Dentists can apply whitening solutions to teeth and activate the solutions using lasers. This can cause the tooth to lighten in a very short time.
