Answer to Question 1

Mitch was a strong hurricane, with high winds, low pressure, etc.
Mitch made landfall in a mountainous area, slowing the storm and
increasing the rainfall.
Weak volcanic soils saturated easily and failed on steep mountain slopes.
Landfall struck where many poorer communities had lower construction
standards and limited emergency-management resources.

Mountains  by increasing uplift of moist air, resulting in increasing
condensation.
