Answer to Question 1

Mitch was a strong hurricane, with high winds, low pressure, etc.
Mitch made landfall in a mountainous area, slowing the storm and
increasing the rainfall.
Weak volcanic soils saturated easily and failed on steep mountain slopes.
Landfall struck where many poorer communities had lower construction
standards and limited emergency-management resources.

Answer to Question 2

Factors that can signifi cantly increase rainfall from a tropical cyclone include
Mountains  by increasing uplift of moist air, resulting in increasing
condensation.
Speed along track  slower storms remain over an area for a longer time,
dropping more rain over a smaller area.
