Answer to Question 1

Answers will vary depending on where students live. For instance, a student living in the Great Plains of the United States might discuss the various farming practices that occur on the Mollisols in the area, while an individual in southwestern United States may discuss the need for extensive irrigation on the Aridisols in the area.

Answer to Question 2

Scientists cannot currently accurately predict earthquakes, that is, the time and place they will occur. One approach is the study of paleoseismology to look at the history of each plate boundary in order to determine the frequency of past earthquakes. A second approach is to observe and measure the phenomena which may precede an earthquake. Earthquakes can be devastating events, both in terms of life lost and property damage.
