The ocean's capacity for CO2 uptake is greatly enhanced by the fact that it is buffered by dissolved carbonate and borate species. Once the buffering capacity of the ocean is exceeded by CO2 dissolution, the ability of the oceans to take in CO2 will be greatly diminished. Therefore, oceanic CO2 uptake is limited by its buffering capacity.
