Cognitive apprenticeships are similar to traditional apprenticeships in that novices work alongside more knowledgeable others to acquire skills. The more knowledgeable individual models the skill and provides scaffolding for the novice as he or she develops the skill. The difference is that traditional apprenticeships involved the development of physical skills, such as welding or plumbing, whereas cognitive apprenticeships involve cognitive skills, such as problem solving. Cognitive apprenticeships also more strongly emphasize other aspects of cognitive learning, such as verbalization of understanding.

Answer to Question 2

A novel example of cognitive apprenticeship could exist in any content area. A description of the expert and the novice should be included, and a suggestion how the situation could demonstrate modeling, scaffolding, verbalization, exploration, and increased complexity should be included in the response.
