Answer to Question 1

The neuron, or nerve cell, is the learning unit of the brain. It is composed of a cell body; dendrites, which extend from the cell body and receive messages from other neurons; and axons, which transmit outgoing messages to other neurons. Signals are sent across synapses, tiny spaces between neurons. As people acquire experiences, the number of synaptic connections per neuron increases, resulting in cognitive development. This physiology corroborates the idea that experience is essential for development.
