One should never allow pears to tree-ripen. They need to be picked before they are
  ripe. Store them wrapped in soft paper at 65-70 degrees for ten days to a few weeks,
  depending on the variety of pear. Pears are ready to pick when the tree has lost its first one,
  and their color has turned from green to gold. The pears which are ready, will come off the
  tree easily when tipped from the bottom upward.
