Answer to Question 1

The three most far-reaching effects of underground mining are ground subsidence, the collapse of the
overburden into mined-out areas, and acid mine drainage. Acid mine drainage is generally considered
to be the most serious of the three

Answer to Question 2

The pros include decreased expense, more complete removal of coal, and safer working conditions for
miners. The cons include greater disruption of the land surface and increased potential for serious
negative environmental impacts if the land is not carefully reclaimed.
