Answer to Question 1

Imagine building a fence at the time illustrated in Figure 4.2(b). Notice that the original fence is
already bent by flexing of the ground on either side of the fault. After an earthquake as in Figure 4.2
(d), the original fence would end up straight again. The new fence, however, would end up noticeably
curved after the earthquake, with each end bent in the direction of fault motion



Answer to Question 2

The elastic rebound theory. Strain energy builds up within rock masses along a fault line and is
released suddenly just as a rubber band snaps when it stretched and then released. This sends out a
pulse of energy felt as vibrations and shaking
