Answer to Question 1

The two major acids involved in acid deposition are nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Nitric acid primarily comes from tailpipe emissions (56) and fuel combustion at fixed sites (39), and sulfuric acid primarily comes from fuel combustion (mostly from coal-burning power plants) (86).

Answer to Question 2

(A)n acid is any chemical that releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. A base is any chemical that releases hydroxide ions (OH, oxygen-hydrogen groups with an extra electron) when dissolved in water. pH is (t)he concentration of hydrogen ions. . . . The pH scale is a way of measuring the amount of hydrogen or hydroxide ions in a solution. It ranges from 0 to 14 . Numbers below 7 represent acids, and numbers above 7 represent bases.
