Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1) Underlying sedimentary strata tilt parallel to the slope. 2) The Gros Ventre River eroded through the sandstone, leaving the sandstone layer in a precarious position over clay bed that was becoming slick.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Ice crystals are filling the pore spaces of the sediment, which leaves no room for anything else.
