Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Osmotic pressure depends on the number of particles in solution but not on their charge or iden-tity. A 2 solution has twice the osmotic pressure of a 1 solution under similar pressures. For a given amount of solute, osmotic pressure is inversely proportional to the volume of solvent. Os-motic pressure varies directly with temperature, increasing by 1/273 for each 1 C.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Osmotic pressure can also be visualized as an attractive force of solute particles in a concentrated solution. If 100 ml of a 50 solution is placed on one side of a membrane and 100 ml of a 30 solution is placed on the other side, solvent molecules will move from the dilute to the concen-trated side (Figure 13-2, D and E). The particles in the concentrated solution attract solvent mol-ecules from the dilute solution until equilibrium occurs. Equilibrium exists when the concentra-tions (i.e., ratio of solute to solvent) in both compartments are equal (40 in Figure 13-2).

Calcitonin is a naturally occurring hormone. In women who are at least 5 years beyond menopause, it slows bone loss and increases spinal bone density.

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).
