Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Erythrocyte concentrations of 2,3-DPG in banked blood decrease over time. After a week of storage, the 2,3-DPG level may be less than one-third of the normal value.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
The impact of changes in blood pH on hemoglobin affinity for O2 is called the Bohr effect. As shown in Figure 12-10, the Bohr effect alters the position of the HbO2 dissociation curve. A low pH (acidity) shifts the curve to the right, decreasing Hb affinity for O2 and thus O2 saturation.

Fatal fungal infections may be able to resist newer antifungal drugs. Globally, fungal infections are often fatal due to the lack of access to multiple antifungals, which may be required to be utilized in combination. Single antifungals may not be enough to stop a fungal infection from causing the death of a patient.
