Answer to Question 2

B
Feedback:
Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory disease occurring most commonly in young children who have not been immunized. Symptoms begin with bronchitis and a slight temperature elevation. The cough steadily worsens, leading to paroxysms (spasms) of coughing, characterized by a whooping sound. The person may cough so hard that he or she vomits or becomes dyspneic (labored breathing). Early symptoms of tetanus include the inability to open or close the jaw, difficulty in swallowing, and stiffness in the neck and abdomen. Typically, symptoms are a throat inflammation. Diphtheria also may appear in the nose, larynx, or trachea, and is followed by the formation of a whitish-gray membrane that is closely adherent and cannot be removed without causing bleeding. Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a serious, bacterial infection that may affect many organ systems, causing pneumonia, meningitis, epiglotitis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, cellulitis, otitis media, and septic arthritis.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

There used to be a metric calendar, as well as metric clocks. The metric calendar, or "French Republican Calendar" divided the year into 12 months, but each month was divided into three 10-day weeks. Each day had 10 decimal hours. Each hour had 100 decimal minutes. Due to lack of popularity, the metric clocks and calendars were ended in 1795, three years after they had been first marketed.
