Answer to Question 1

ANS: C
The central canal of the vertebral column can become narrowed and cause compression on the cord. Urgent decompression is necessary to remove segments of bone causing symptoms because prolonged pressure can cause permanent damage and loss of motor function and sensation.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
The anterior retroperitoneal lumbar approach is performed on a supine patient through an abdominal incision. The patient may be supine or in the lateral position. The peritoneal cavity is displaced laterally and retracted away from the retroperitoneal space. The retroperitoneal method is used for placement of interbody cages for stabilization.
