Cricoid pressure is pressure applied to the cricoid cartilage to occlude the esophagus and immobilize the trachea to prevent regurgitation and aspiration of stomach contents.

Examples of iatrogenic injures in the OR include nerves injured from faulty positioning, such as hyperabduction or extension of the arm; loosened teeth or damage to dental work during endotracheal intubation; pressure sores from laying on poorly padded areas; fingers and body parts pinched in OR bed flexures; careless handling of an anesthetized patient resulting in paralysis; fractures or postoperative pain; and eyes injured from irritating anesthetics or facemasks or from drying or scratching of the cornea if the eyelids are not closed.
