Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Mechanical external pressure devices may be applied before the patient arrives in the OR or after the patient is transferred to the operating bed. The intended purpose may be prophylactic to prevent venous stasis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or pulmonary embolus intraoperatively and postoperatively. Sequential compression devices are inflatable, double-walled vinyl or woven fabric leg wraps that use alternating compression and relaxation to reduce the risk of DVT in the legs of high-risk patients undergoing general anesthesia or those experiencing extremes of intraoperative positioning.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency requiring linear incisions to release pressure within a capsule. It is frequently seen in limbs and requires a fasciotomy.
