Answer to Question 1

Correct preparation of the hoof is essential for the production of diagnostic-quality
radiographs. Shoe removal is an essential component of this process. To remove the shoe, the
technician should do the following:
a. Clean foot using hoof pick. Place foot on hoof stand.
b. Use smooth side of rasp to file off clinches. Alternatively an old pair of nippers can be used
to cut the clinches if shoes are old/loose.
c. Holding hoof in a farrier stance, use pullers to grasp the heel portion of the shoe. Apply
pressure and begin prying the shoe from the hoof. Alternate between the medial and lateral
sides of the shoe. Gradually work toward the toe until the shoe is removed.

Answer to Question 2

Dosimetry badges are personal monitoring devises that measure the amount of radiation
exposure. All clinic personnel involved in the production of radiographs should wear
dosimetry badges.
