The wife of a client with paranoid schizophrenia tells the nurse, I've learned that my husband has several close relatives with the same disorder.
 
  Does this problem run in families? The response based on recent discoveries in the field of ge-netics would be:
  1. It's odd, but it's just a coincidence.
  2. Research has identified a gene linked to schizophrenia.
  3. Are you concerned that your children may develop the disorder?
  4. Only bipolar disorder has been identified to have a genetic component.

The nurse is discouraged because his plan to reduce negative symptoms of schizophrenia (apathy, avolition, inattentiveness, poor socialization, poor eye contact and flat affect, etc.) in a client is not working.
 
  The mentor's remark that helps place the problem in perspective is:

  2. Clients can be perverse and cling to symptoms despite our efforts.
