Various studies show that physical and sexual abuse seem to be significant risk factors for BPD (Zanarini, Laudate, Frankenburg, Reich, & Fitzmaurice, 2011). Other studies cite parental loss and separation (Steele & Siever, 2010). Parental alcohol abuse, poverty, and a history of depression have not been linked to BPD.
