  • In lines 3744, Marvells point seems to be that time works a gradual, insidious violence. It is like a devouring beast (slow-chapped), holding us in its inexorable jaws. Some students will find the imagery odd, even offensive in a love poem: birds of prey (who want to eat, not be eaten), the cannonball of strength and sweetness that batters lifes iron gates. Violence is not the speakers counsel, but urgency. His harsh images lend his argument intensity and force.
