Answer to Question 1

A group of biologists studying the spotted owl in the Pacific Northwest forests contended that the owl needed large tracts of old growth timber to breed and raise young. In an effort to preserve the owl, logging operations were halted and many people lost their jobs. There were many debates over whether saving the owl was more important than providing jobs. It was later determined that the owls could reproduce in second growth forests.

Answer to Question 2

Trees were often seen as pests by early settlers because they often stood in the way of cultivating crops. They had to kill or burn trees in many cases to make room for crops.
