When the nucleus of the sperm enters the egg, the egg releases proteins and carbohydrates that form a layer, known as the fertilization membrane, around the egg to prevent any more sperm from entering. Once the nuclei of the sperm and egg combine, the correct number of chromosomes are established, and the fertilization process is complete.
