Answer to Question 1

To make the highest profit, animals must be healthy and have the least stress possible. Sows are placed in farrowing crates to protect piglets that might otherwise be crushed by the mother. Also, animals have been specially bred over the years for confinement operations. Animals in confinement are easier to care for. Millions of dollars and countless hours of effort go into research to design housing and facilities that make animals comfortable.
