Answer to Question 1

There are solutions to preserve glyphosate's effectiveness (or any herbicide's effectiveness) over the long term. Agricultural practices that avoid resistance need to be adopted by farmers and encouraged by the seed companies. Crop rotation with non-glyphosate resistant varieties of crops may begin to address the growing weed resistance to glyphosate. Diversified weed management techniques and varied selection pressures including utilizing a range of different chemicals, soil cultivation practices and tillage, and utilizing cover crops all can reduce reliance on a single chemical (and a single chemical pathway) for effective weed control. In addition, managing weed seed production and lowering the weed seedbank throughout the growing season will lessen the need for herbicides.
