Answer to Question 1

One function of organic matter is the sequestration of nutrients like carbon. Because carbon is a major component of organic matter, organic matter is therefore an important component of the global carbon cycle. Another function is the source of nutrients. Organic matter also serves as a reservoir for essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and boron. These nutrients are either attached to the surface of the organic matter or are a component of the organic matter. Soil aggregation and structure is another important function. Organic matter is a binding agent that joins the mineral portions of the soil together. Aggregation of soil particles is important in soil tilth and aeration. Organic matter helps store water in the soil. It absorbs water like a sponge and retains it for plant growth. The last function is chemical sequestration. Organic matter can tie up toxic chemicals and pesticides that would otherwise contaminate groundwater.
