The primary beneficial effects of ventilation include:

1 . Reducing the humidity of the air around the birds, facilitating evaporation-based cooling
2 . Allowing drying of the litter, consequently reducing pathogens and aiding the health of the birds' feet

Village poultry contribute to poverty alleviation and the improvement of food security in that they:

1 . Provide a significant source of high-quality protein that is so important for young children
2 . Can be sold or bartered to provide a source of income, which may be the only source of cash income
3 . Are frequently cared for by women and children, who receive the benefit
