Answer to Question 1

Professional foresters need at least a bachelor's degree in forestry from an accredited school of forestry. Courses
in biology, natural resource management, environmental sciences, or related disciplines are necessary. An
advanced degree (typically a PhD) will be needed if you are interested in conducting research or teaching at
the university level.

Answer to Question 2

Foresters must be able to use sophisticated surveying instruments to survey forest resources. They estimate standing
timber volume, identify tree species, identify disease and insect problems, plan for pest and disease control, plan
fire prevention programs, and plan forest management programs. In addition, they must be able to use technology
such as Geographic Information System (GIS) used for mapping large forest areas, handheld computers, Global
Positioning System (GPS), and World Wide Web applications. Foresters also use computers and photographs
taken by satellites.
