An advantage of mixed plantings is that it reduces damage by insects that are attracted to plants by smell by confusing them. Mixing also works for underground pests. Roots of
pest-resistant varieties may release compounds that inhibit or kill the insects' larvae.
Sweet potato roots produce an allelopathic compound that reduces the growth of some
weeds.

Students should discuss at least two of the following advantages of using high tunnels:frost
protection, ability to sow seeds in the ground, reduce insect damage, and reduce
the need for pesticides.
