Answer to Question 1

To dwarf a rootstock means to control the size and rate of growth of certain trees by
selecting the proper rooting stock. It is done in cases where smaller trees that bear fruit
earlier are desired.

Answer to Question 2

Some plant cuttings require the assistance of rooting hormone to root successfully. The
development of chemical rooting hormones made it possible to root certain plant
cuttings that were considered impossible to root before; they also shortened the length
of time required to root cuttings
