Answer to Question 1

B
Appendicitis, the most common inflammation of the GI tract, occurs when the vermiform appendix attached to the cecum becomes inflamed, gangrenous, or infected; the appendix may rupture and cause peritonitis from introduction of fecal content into the abdominal cavity. The client experiences right lower quadrant pain, nausea, and anorexia. An elevation in white blood cells (normal 4,500/mm3 to 11,000/mm3) and neutrophils (50 to 75) will verify the physical symptoms.

Answer to Question 2

C
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an abnormal stimulation of the clotting mechanism, which consumes clotting factors, causing small clots throughout the vascular system and widespread bleeding internally, externally, or both. Correction of the underlying cause is the main aspect of medical management.
